Surviving recordings from my teenage years.

"Cthulhuoid," "Black Hole" and "Interface" were recorded in Winter/Spring 1977 at my high school's electronic music lab. Or, more modestly, a spare room where our music theory teacher generously set up his Moog Sonic Six for us all to have unsupervised (!) solo sessions on a weekly schedule. A cassette recorder was on hand for recording assigned exercises -- live to tape, no overdubs. "Cthulhuoid" was an assignment to create a piece without using the keyboard; the Six's dual low frequency control oscillators were sooo handy for that one. "Black Hole" was on my own hook, half an hour of random teenage noodling fueled by krautrock and Sun Ra; you are warned. "Interface" (February 1977) was my soundtrack for a modern dance video art piece (such an avant gardy arts program hiding in our small town school). I recorded the Sonic Six on a two-track reel-to-reel for that; so simple overdubbing was possible, but I only used it for cross-fading between the different patch sections.

"A Modern Education" was recorded July 28-31, 1977. Basically a piano duet with additional instruments, overdubbed using two two-track reel-to-reels, trying to manually synch them for the mixdown to cassette -- pretty badly at the start, but they drift together slightly better by the end. Or I'm imagining that. A post-graduation summer project, scrounging gear this time around from the public access media center located in our little school. That's fuzz banjo, not guitar. How many Henry Cow influences can you spot?

"Concrete" was recorded at home on September 5, 1978. Musique concrète literalized as only a teenager could -- solo guitar in live collaboration with an unknowing street construction crew. One mic on the amp, one mic out the window. And I finally had real fuzz guitar. The full piece went on for album-side length, which my mind was probably hard-wired for at the time.
